The Maharashtra government proclaimed a public holiday for tomorrow (February 7) in honor of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar's death. The chief minister's office (CMO) issued a statement announcing the one-day mourning and public holiday.
The Central Government has previously set a two-day national mourning period in honor of Lata Mangeshkar. The National Flag is flown at half-mast throughout India during the state mourning, and there will be no official entertainment. It has also been agreed that the departed soul shall be given a funereal state.
At the age of 92, the iconic singer passed away on Sunday morning. After being diagnosed with pneumonia and coronavirus in January, the Bharat Ratna awardee was admitted to the hospital.
Earlier in the day, CM Uddhav Thackeray expressed grief at the demise of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. He said it has left him "heartbroken".
A State funeral will be accorded to Lata Mangeshkar, the CM's office said.
On Sunday afternoon, Lata Mangeshkar's lifeless remains were taken to her Peddar Road home, 'Prabhukunj.' Her last rites will be performed at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on the other hand, has announced that the state government will mark a half-day vacation tomorrow (February 7) in honor of singer Lata Mangeshkar Banerjee further declared that for the following 15 days, Lata Mangeshkar's songs would be played at every public location, government installation, and traffic light.
